Why a competitor ranks above you

Watching a competitor take the top spot on Google Maps while you sit below them is frustrating, especially when your work is better. If someone searches "emergency plumber" and your competitor's primary category is a closer match than yours, they get a head start. Categories are one of the strongest relevance signals on a profile.

They are closer to the searcher

Distance is one of Google's three local ranking factors. If their address is nearer to where most searches happen, they win there by default. You cannot move, but you can outrank them on the other two factors.

They have more, and more recent, reviews

Review volume, rating and how recently reviews came in all feed into prominence. A competitor with a steady trickle of new reviews often beats a business with more reviews that all date from years ago.

Their website backs up their profile

Google cross checks your profile against your website. Service pages, location mentions and consistent details all add relevance.

What if they are cheating?

Sometimes the answer is less fair. Common tricks include stuffing keywords into the business name, using a fake address or running several listings for one business. These break Google's guidelines, and Google offers a way to report them. It is worth doing, but it is slow and uncertain, so it should never be your whole plan.

• Compare primary and secondary categories side by side
• Compare review count, rating and review frequency
• Check how many services and photos each profile lists
• Look at their website for pages you do not have
• Check their business name and address for guideline breaches
