How to get on Google Maps: the basics

1. Create your Google Business Profile

Your Maps listing comes from a Google Business Profile. You create one with a Google account, enter your business name exactly as it appears in real life, and choose whether customers visit you, you visit them, or both.

2. Choose the right primary category

This is the single most important setting. It tells Google what your business is. Pick the category that best matches your main service, not a broad one that sounds good.

3. Verify the profile

Google needs to confirm you are a real business. Depending on your business, that might be a video, a phone or email code, or a postcard. Your listing will not appear properly on Maps until this is done.

4. Fill in everything

• Services, with clear names and short descriptions
• Opening hours, including special hours for holidays
• Real photos of your premises, team and work
• A business description written for customers
• Your website link and contact details

Being on the map is not the same as being found

Here is the bit nobody tells you. Once your profile is live, you are on Google Maps, but that does not mean anyone will see you. For most searches, Google shows just three businesses at the top. If you are number eight or number fifteen, you are technically on the map, but customers rarely scroll that far.

So getting listed is step one. Step two is ranking. That means building reviews, strengthening relevance with the right services and content, and making your business more prominent than the competition nearby.
