Your Google Maps ranking dropped. Now what?

A sudden drop on Google Maps usually comes down to a handful of causes: a profile edit Google did not like, a competitor pushing harder, lost reviews, a spam filter or a core update. A quick checklist to work out what happened

Is the profile still live, or has it been suspended?
Did anyone edit the name, address, category or hours recently?
Have any reviews disappeared?
Has a new competitor opened nearby, or has one become more active?
Did your website change, go down or lose pages?
Is the drop everywhere, or only in certain areas?

Edits and re-verification

Changing your business name, address or primary category can cause Google to look at your profile again. Sometimes rankings dip while that happens, and sometimes Google asks you to verify again.

The proximity filter

If another business in the same category shares your building or sits very close, Google may show only one of you for some searches. Your listing has not gone, it has just been filtered out of that particular result.

Google updates

Google changes how it ranks local results from time to time. When that happens, rankings can shift across a whole area. This is where tracking matters, because you can see if you dropped alone or with everyone.

Rankings depend on location. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, so you can rank differently street to street.

Three spots only. Falling from third to fourth can mean dropping out of the Map Pack completely.
